Free mental health workshops for the children in the townships of Cape Town

Child psychologist Stijn takes his old Volkswagen bus into the townships to provide kids with free mental health coaching. Through the workshops Little Lions helps these children to become mentally stronger and to find their inner lion.

Where it all started

Three years ago, after finishing his psychology masters at the University of Amsterdam and working as a child psychologist for two years, Stijn moved to Cape Town to start his PhD. Fully aware of the impact mental health issues have on a day-to-day basis, he witnessed first hand in which harsh circumstances so many children live. He was astonished, especially when he found out the government does not act on this need...

And there it was, the only reason Stijn needed to start Little Lions, only 5 months after arriving in Cape Town.

How Little Lions has been building resilience since 2019

In 2019, through crowdfunding, Little Lions managed to buy the iconic Leonista bus. This mobile clinic got a transformation and the Little Lions HQ was born. It marked the start of the life-changing resilience workshops for children in Langa, Khayelitsha and Imizamo Yethu.

Between the start in October 2019 and our lockdown in March, 60 children from the age of 8 to 13 years old have been able to find opportunities for personal growth, building stronger emotional relationships and coping strategies through resilience workshops given every week for a full month.

This number has grown to 150 children in 2020 and, with your help, it will increase to 1500 within 2021.
